Cranial osteopathy is a subtle form of osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body. When we experience physical or emotional stress our body tissues tighten up and over time may restrict the body’s free movement. Over time this accumulated stress can lead to the development of physical symptoms.
Cranial osteopathy uses gentle pressure on the bones of the skull in able to feel a very subtle, rhythmical shape change that is present in all of the tissues of the body; this is called involuntary motion or cranial rhythm. Tensions in our body can disrupt the cranial rhythm. The patient usually experiences a sensation of mild pressure and warmth followed by a release of tension and feeling of deep relaxation.
Cranial osteopathy has shown to be particularly suitable for babies. During the birthing process- the baby’s head is subjected to significant changes in pressure, particularly when the birth has been via assisted delivery from forceps or suction or when labour has been particularly abrupt or prolonged.
Usually babies recover within their first few days of life through crying, feeding or yawning, however in some, the tensions remain which can lead to colicky crying, disturbed sleep, difficulties feeding and irritable behaviour and may appear uncomfortable when lying flat. Cranial osteopathy helps to relieve these tensions in the baby’s head to aid rebalance of their body.
